A basic engine service includes the inspection of four of your engine’s components, the cylinders, rods, pistons, and crankshaft. It is one of the best ways to extend the life of your vehicle. However, even with the best of care, a vehicle will need an engine repair.
If your vehicle is heading towards a needed engine repair, you will usually start to notice some unmistakable symptoms. These symptoms can include smoke of various colors, loss of power, running rough, and knocking sounds from quiet to very loud. Should your vehicle display these symptoms, take your vehicle into an auto shop for a necessary engine repair as soon as possible.
When you take your car in for an engine repair, you can expect that the engine will be thoroughly inspected first. The mechanic will evaluate your engines cylinders which house the pistons and allow for the fuel air mix to be drawn into the engine, beginning the combustion process. The cylinder head closes the cylinder and limits the head generated by the combustion process. When your cylinders are not functioning properly your vehicle may leak, misfire, or overheat.
The pistons within the cylinders move up and down, creating the vacuum that draws in the fuel air mix. A failing piston can cause the engine to knock or rattle, misfire, and lose power. A basic engine service will also include inspection of the engine’s rods which connect the pistons to the crankshaft.
The crankshaft essentially translates the up and down motion of the pistons into the rotational motions needed to move your vehicle. The crankshaft is under constant stress and needs proper lubrication to work efficiently. Trouble starting your vehicle and intermittent stalling can indicate a problem with the crankshaft. During a basic engine service, the mechanic will ensure the proper working order of all components so that your engine is less likely to need repairs.
